You may have noticed the change. Gosh we hope you did. CIRT redesigned the main Faculty Domains site to accomplish a couple of things.
First and foremost was our aim for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, specifically regarding web accessibility. Some background, details, and links to resources regarding ADA is available on our accessibility page. As we built the new site, we took advantage of the web accessibility evaluation tool, known as WAVE, to check our site’s pages for compliance.
We also wanted to have a nice looking and functional design. We were hoping that a page builder plugin called Elementor would allow us to not only to give us pleasing results, but wouldn’t be working against us in terms of accessibility. We were pleasantly surprised.
Like most public educational institutions, UNF is required by law to make accommodations to remove barriers to information for individuals with disabilities so that they may participate to the fullest extent possible. We are happy to say that we have made much progress down that road with this website. The knowledge that we have gained will help us help faculty navigate the somewhat complex world of web accessibility, while also having a tool that can provide impressive designs, and worry less about compromise.
We’ll write more about Elementor in the future, and we’ll constantly monitor our compliance with ADA standards, but we’re happy for now to just announce what’s new for the New Year. A happy one to you all!
